Celebrated conductor and Shanghai Conservatory of Music professor Wu Qiang leads two distinguished virtuosi in this concert featuring heartfelt dialogue between bowed strings and wind instruments.

Professor Wu brings her acumen and sensitivity to the podium, providing interpretations at once colourful and thoughtful, enabling the ensemble to display the richness of Chinese orchestral music through a perfect balance of rigour and agility.

Huqin master Ru Yi and suona virtuoso Liu Wenwen are the featured soloists. Tracing lineage to the late erhu legend Sun Wenming, Ru reveals his artistry in The Joy of Plucking and Flute Phrases in the Quiet Night bridging tradition and modernity. Liu, who holds China’s first doctorate in the instrument, displays her explosive power and emotional depth in A Century of Nirvana, conveying the majestic spirit of rebirth through fire.

From the vibrant ethnic flavour of Three Patterns of Red for the Huayao People and the epic grandeur of The Legend of Shadir to the refined elegance of The Lingering Garden through Four Seasons, the programme is a moving feast covering different geographical regions. Come join us to celebrate the calling phoenix and the soaring strings.
