Contenders For The Reeds, New Movement In Sheng
Competition For Professional Sheng Performance and Call For New Works
From May 6 to 8, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and HKCO jointly organise a competition for professional sheng players and a call for new works concurrent with the 3rd Shanghai Conservatory of Music Sheng Art Week in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Conservatory’s Traditional Chinese Music Department. Benchmarked against international standards, these events aim to discover new professional talents and stimulate creativity for the instrument today. The competition received strong support from schools and organizations worldwide, with 211 valid entries. Contestants came from 11 top music conservatories in China, as well as dozens of schools and orchestras from mainland China, Hong Kong, South Korea, and other places. The call for compositions received 43 valid entries from mainland China, Singapore, South Korea, Russia, the United States, and other countries.

The Winners' Concert was directed by Professor Zhong Zhiyue from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, as ancient reeds meet a new generation imbued with skill and enthusiasm, offering a rich variety of compositions both refined and virtuosic.
